CNI Spring 2005 Task Force Meeting
5 April 2005
Washington, D.C., USA
Two
members of the IESR project team, Ann Apps and Amanda Hill, attended the CNI
Spring 2005 Task Force Meeting in Washington, D.C. on 4-5 April 2005. A
joint presentation with Jeremy Frumkin of the Ockham
Initiative was given, entitled Creating a Digital Library Services
Registry: Two Approaches.
The session was well-attended, and generated a number of interesting questions and follow-up conversations over the course of the day.
One issue that was raised was the chicken and egg problem, in that
other applications may not wish to use the registry if there is limited
information within it, while service providers are unlikely to want to
provide information about their services if they are unclear about whether
there will be any clear benefit to them in terms of increased use.
However, as no-one will be able to use something that does not exist at
all, it was generally agreed that we do need to start somewhere, and that
these two projects are undertaking a useful role in testing the need for
registries of collections and services.
