OECD Main Economic Indicators Databank, 1960-2009

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) produces annual, quarterly and monthly data for around 3,800 main economic indicators (MEI). The variables cover national accounts, industrial production, employment, prices, business trends and trade for the member countries of the OECD and 6 non-member countries. The dataset also includes the OECD's leading indicators (key variables that signal changes in the business cycle).

The OECD defines each variable separately for each country. Nevertheless, the data are considered sufficiently similar to enable comparisons between countries, especially for relative values and rates of change.

These data were first provided by ESDS International in January 2003. The ESDS International web site includes further information on its OECD MEI holdings, including a database description and details of latest database updates.

IMF International Financial Statistics, 1948-2009

Published monthly since 1948, the International Financial Statistics (IFS) database is the principal statistical publication of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and is the standard source for all aspects of international and domestic finance. The database contains approximately 32,000 time series for over 200 countries and geographical areas. It reports, for most countries, time series data on exchange rates, balance of payments, international liquidity, money and banking, interest rates, prices, production, international transactions, government accounts, national accounts and population.

Selected data, including data on Fund accounts, international reserves and international trade, are also aggregated into regional and world tables.

Data are reported in a mixture of indexes, national currencies, US Dollars and SDRs (the basket currency the IMF uses as a unit of account). Most annual data begin in 1948; quarterly and monthly data generally begin in 1957; most balance of payments data begin in 1970.

This database was first provided by ESDS International in December 2003. The ESDS International web site includes further information on its IMF IFS holdings, including a database description and details of latest database updates.

UNIDO Industrial Statistics Databases, 1963-2006

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Industrial Statistics are presented in three annual databases covering up to 180 countries worldwide. They contain data from 1963 onwards on employment, wages, output, value added, gross fixed capital formation, number of female employees, number of establishments and production level broken down by industrial sector.

The databanks are built around the International Standard Industries Classification (ISIC) code system, which classifies industry broadly along product lines (such as food, textiles, iron and steel). Of the three Industrial Statistics Databases, the first is based on the 3 digit level Revision 2 of the code. The 3 digit level contains 28 industrial sectors plus data for total manufacturing. The second database is based on the 4 digit level Revision 2 of the code. This more detailed level contains 81 industrial categories. The third database is based on Revision 3 of the code. In this database, data reported at levels 3 and 4 of the code are combined.

These data were first provided by ESDS International in November 2003. The ESDS International web site includes further information on its UNIDO Industrial Statistics holdings, including a database description and details of latest database updates.

The two United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Demand-Supply databases included in the dataset cover up to 80 countries from 1981 onwards, and contain data on domestic output, apparent consumption, imports from the world, developing countries and industrialized countries, and exports to the world, developing countries and industrialized countries.

UNIDO produces two versions of the Demand-Supply Database. One is based on the 1968 Revision 2 of the International Standard Industries Classification (ISIC) code and the other is based on the 1989 Revision 3 of the code.

These data were first provided by ESDS International in November 2003. The ESDS International web site includes further information on its UNIDO Industrial Demand-Supply holdings, including a database description and details of latest database updates.

IMF Direction of Trade Statistics, 1980-2009

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Direction of Trade Statistics (DOTS) database contains data on the value of merchandise exports and imports between each country and all its trading partners. Total bilateral and multilateral exports and imports are aggregated at national or regional group level. For each reporting country or group, all the trading partners are listed. The corresponding monetary values of total imports and total exports are then provided as time series for each country/trading partner pair. All exports are valued free on board (f.o.b.). Imports are usually reported cost including insurance and freight (c.i.f.), although a small number of countries report imports f.o.b.

Along with data from reporting countries, estimates are provided by partner countries for non-reporting countries or for those that are slow to report.

The period for which data are available varies from country to country, but most countries data extend from the 1980s to the present. The Direction of Trade pre-1980 data is found in the DOTS Historical database which runs from 1948 to 1980.

There can be inconsistencies between exports to a partner and the partner's recorded imports from a particular country, i.e. the exports from Country A to B do not always equal the imports of Country B from A. This is due to the different ways countries report their trade, i.e. differences in classification concepts and detail, time of recording, valuation, and coverage, as well as processing errors. The Documentation on the Direction of Trade CD provides more information on sources of inconsistency.

This database was first provided by ESDS International in December 2003. The ESDS International web site includes further information on its IMF DOTS holdings, including a database description and details of latest database updates.

Community Led Image Collections (CLIC)

The Community Led Image Collections (CLIC) study reviewed the growth of community owned digital image collections, surveyed the socio-cultural, institutional and technical barriers owners face in image collection building, and made recommendations on how national initiatives could help in sharing and embedding the collections within the wider national FE and HE sectors. The project was co-ordinated by the Learning Technologies Group at Oxford University Computing Services in collaboration with the Technical Advisory Service for Images and other institutions. This listing of UK image collections was identified in an early scoping study in September 2005 as being of interest to the HE community. This list by its nature is in no way definitive but may help others in future research.
