Implementation of changes identified by Metadata Review February 2007:
Encoding schemes UDC for subject and LCSH for spatial no longer available
itemType has possible additional values ScholarlyText (from Eprints Application Profile Type Vocabulary) and Party in a new vocabulary iesr:ItemTypeList
seeAlso property for Collection, Service and Agent available to other users of the IESR Application Profile, but not used by IESR
Added 'alternative' for Service, for OpenURL resolver only, to capture preferred link text
Service 'output' dropped from IESR use
Date modified may include time, but not used by IESR
Added property 'status' to administrative metadata
Application Profile is less restrictive for general use, with tighter IESR restrictions indicated
Standard definitions and comments, and Labels added

Changes from previous versions are in the linked document |
This document is an application profile for the JISC Information Environment Service Registry (IESR), described according to the Dublin Core Application Profile Guidelines (CEN/ISSS CWA14855, ftp://ftp.cenorm.be/PUBLIC/CWAs/e-Europe/MMI-DC/cwa14855-00-2003-Nov.pdf) with an additional attribute 'IESR Searchable'. For terms that are defined elsewhere, by DCMI or RSLP, the document gives Source Definitions, and local refinements of those definitions (indicated as 'IESR AP Definition') where necessary, and similarly for Comments. In consideration of the document length only those application profile attributes necessary to define each property are included. Some attributes are not used at all within this application profile: type of term; refines; refined by; similar to.
This application profile is available for use by other collection and service registry initiatives. In some places IESR requirements for Occurrence are more restrictive than for general use. This is indicated by an 'IESR Occurrence' in addition to an 'Occurrence' field. Encoding Schemes and Conditions that apply to IESR only are indicated similarly with an 'IESR' prefix.
'Occurrence' is defined as a minimum and maximum pair (Min; Max) effectively indicating where an occurence is mandatory.
How some Collection properties map to those in the 'cld' and 'marcrel' namespaces of the DCMI Collection Description Application Profile is indicated within Comments.
'IESR Searchable' indicates whether a property has a searchable index within the IESR. The associated Z39.50 Bib-1 attributes and index names, which may be used in a Z39.50 search for these properties, are indicated. Also indicated are specific searching restrictions such as an exact match or a date format. The Z39.50 indexes are listed as: a comma-separated list of Bib-1 attributes; followed by a semi-colon; then a comma-separated list of index names. For example 'title' is searchable using the Bib-1 attribute 4 or the corresponding IESR index 'title'. It is also available for searching using the Bib-1 attribute 1016 (Any) and the IESR index 'anywhere'. This would be indicated as:
IESR Searchable 4, 1016; title, anywhere
'IESR Searchable' applies to the IESR application only.
Metadata properties described in this application profile are those that are used in external metadata supplied by the public services of IESR. There are a few properties in the administrative metadata maintained locally that are not described here: dc:creator (name of person who created the metadata); dc:contributor; dcterms:created.
The associated controlled lists associated with some properties are defined in a separate document.

Note that theoretically a catalogue has records that are metadata (and therefore text). Thus, for example when describing a catalogue into an image collection, to indicate a Collection of type 'Catalogue' with 'itemType=Image' is strictly incorrect. In a perfect world the catalogue and the collection would be modelled as two separate collections with a 'describes' relation. However, to take a pragmatic approach, acknowledging that IESR is a practical application, such modelling would be over complicated for understanding by many users. The information that they actually want to know is that the catalogue will provide them access to images. Therefore we decided to conflate the two collections and allow Collections with, eg. 'type=Catalogue' and 'itemType=Image'. |

Typically, a Subject will be expressed as keywords, key phrases or classification codes that describe the topic of a resource. Recommended best paractice is to select a value from a controlled vocabulary or formal classification scheme |
